Best Bloomsday Entertainers Again in 2016

May 16, 2016—Women’s champion Cynthia Limo wasn’t the only performer in the 40th Lilac Bloomsday Run to make it two in a row. Rock group Nixon Rodeo, located at the base of Doomsday Hill as they were in 2015, collected more votes this year than any of the other nearly 30 official performers along the 12-kilometer route. That earned Nixon Rodeo the title of “Best Bloomsday Entertainer” for the second straight year.

Not far behind Nixon Rodeo in the vote tally were the Student Jazz Ensemble, located just after the turn off Government Way to Ft. George Wright, and Black Gingham, an early performer on the course. This year marked the thirteenth annual contest to choose the Best Bloomsday Entertainer.

Whatever their preference in entertainment, Bloomsday runners, walkers and wheelers seemed to enjoy the performances, as they cast over 1,600 votes this year. Voters were able to select their top three performers this year, as they did for the first time in 2015.

“This was the second year with really outstanding weather, and that was good for the entertainers as well as everyone participating in Bloomsday,” said Bloomsday volunteer Laurel Warner, who organized the competition. “Clearly, everyone was having a great time.”

The bands scheduled along the route this year included (in order by location along the course) Rock Club (Rock Cover Band), Black Gingham (Rock), Dawn of Life (Rock/Blues/Funk), Too Many Men (Variety of Pop & Rock), Rylei Franks (Singer/Songwriter-Acoustic Rock). Legacy (Bluegrass), Station 7 (Instrumental Rock/Classic/Alternative), Specialty Music (Popular Music/Accordian), Rockwell (Classic Rock/Country), Student Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Band-Middle School/High School), David Gordon (Rock), Angela Marie Project (All Original Progressive Rock/Funk), Salt (Christian Rock), The Nixon Rodeo (Rock & Roll), Lululemon/Athletica (Cheering Section), Summit View Swank (Mostly "Boomer" Rock), The Salvation Army (Brass Band), Intune (Country/Folk/Rock), The Idaho Hitmen (High Energy Dance/Rock), Bluegrass Menagerie (Bluegrass/Country), Stranglers of Bombay (Classic/Original), FusBol (Pop/Rock), Itts' Cuzzen (Classic Progressive Rock Cover & Original), Shaliach Band (Jewish Folk & Faith), Random Generation (Classic Rock), Mus (Indie Rock), Quarter Monkey (Original Rock), and Last Chance for Gas (70s Rock/Christian Praise).

In addition to official performers, organizers estimated that an additional twelve radio stations and unofficial groups provided music on the course, helping Bloomsday reach its goal of having 40 performers along the route to celebrate the 40th running.

Nixon Rodeo will earn the top prize of $500 in this year’s Best Bloomsday Entertainer contest, while the Student Jazz Ensemble and Black Gingham will get the 2nd and 3rd place awards of $300 and $200. Additional cash rewards will be paid out through random drawings.
